Aiden Update (LONG)
Several of you have wanted an update on Aiden. I apologize but mostly I am on Facebook. And I guess the "oldies" from OH are on my FB so they are aware of everything since birth. I really haven't posted here much about Aiden after I gave birth.
At his four month check-up Aiden was 26.5 inches long and 13 pounds 8 oz. He is very long and skinny. Aiden has had a rough go at it. He has had reflux since birth. They sent him to children's hospital at 6 weeks to be tested for pyloric stenosis since he was doing nothing but vomiting. It was decided he just had severe reflux and needed to see a GI doctor. We tried zantac, prevacid, and finally ended up with the nexium granules.
He got a horrible gastrointestinal infection from the simlac recalled formula. He lost a lot of weight and was ill. Then, it was also found he was lactose intolerant. He went onto Enfamil prosobee and was going better.
He was good for a few weeks and then started getting congestion. There wasn't much to do. They thought maybe reflux was causing it. We just lived with it by suctioning, humidifier, baby vicks, hot shower (just for the steam for him). He has had congestion for 8 weeks.
At Thanksgiving he was taken to children's hospital because the pedi thought he wasn't getting enough oxygen we we talked over the phone. I couldn't lay him flat, he couldn't set up right or anything without coughing gagging. They did deep suction for an hour and he was a happy baby. They tested him for RSV, flu, etc and all negative. Just said he had horrible upper respiratory infection that was viral - keep doing suction, humidifier, add in benadryl, etc.
Well, his reflux just kept getting worse and worse to were he was like a faucet flowing of spit up between bottles. Mind you spit up to me and what some have said spit up is, is different. We would go through 7 clothes changes a day, 17 burp clothes, and countless bibs. He would soak himself and us with spit up all the time. The entire time they said the reflux was the cause of the spit up and the constant congestion.
Aiden is at the pedi's office about every week. Finally, they see he is not gaining the weight he should (he was just spitting up all of each bottle), so we go back to GI and he was set to have endoscope, biopsy (esophagus, stomach, intestine), look at pyloric valve to see if it is functioning properly, and a 24 hour ph study. The GI doctor said his weight to height ratio is 0% (not on the charts). Because he is so tall he is weighting more but he is not gaining any "real" weight. They also want to schedule a swallow study.
He had the procedure on 12/21 and his pyloric valve was almost closed shut. They dilated it in hopes it would reduce the throwing up. He went into respiratory distress during anesthesia. He couldn't hold is oxygen very well that morning after the procedure so he was admitted to the children's hospital. He had breathing treatments and CPT every three hours and was doing better. The pulmanologist just felt it was his lungs trying to recover from anesthesia, plus he had been aspirating every time he refluxed.
Last Thursday, Aiden started breathing funny (panting). I was going to take him to his pedi. He was still congested so I could hear him breathing through his nose. Well, I was driving and realized I didn't hear him. So, I stopped the car and he was not breathing. I revived him and he took a shallow breath. I was about 5 blocks from the children's hospital. I debated about calling the ambulance but thought I could get there quicker. I turned on my emergency flashers and revived him three more times until I pulled into the hospital. Aiden was pale and limp and never cried or opened his eyes. He never turned purple/blue. People swarmed my car and they finally got him to SCREAM bloody murder and then told me it is ok, he is crying.
After a day in the ED of breathing treatments and all kinds of tests. They said he had bronchitis (really they said lungs just not better from the anesthesia issues) and and ear infection. The congestion they feel is still there as always. They think he might be cutting a tooth as well. They sent us home with antibiotic, prednisone (steroid), and breathing treatments.
Aiden is doing better. The steroids are making him eat like he has never eaten in his life and Mr. Cranky Pants! The breathing treatments make his heart race and make him agitated. So, he has trouble falling asleep.
So, back we go to the pedi today to update her and have her listen to his lungs. There is the past four months in a nut shell!

Oh Traci. I didn't realize the most recent developments. Even though we are fb friends I don't have much time on the computer. I pray that Aiden gets some relief from this. So glad that you had the baby cpr class too, yes very important. I will keep you guys in prayer and try to keep better track of your status's. Shari
